Kandy in May
Not the best time
Monsoon season begins in earnest with frequent heavy rains and rising heat. Only worth visiting for Vesak Festival or if you don't mind getting soaked daily.
Weather
May ushers in the southwest monsoon with heavy afternoon and evening rains. Temperatures rise to 30°C during sunny spells but humidity makes it feel oppressive. Mornings at 20°C offer the only relief.

All Months
December through April offers the best weather – warm days around 28°C and cool evenings perfect for temple visits. This is peak season, so book accommodation early and expect higher prices.
The southwest monsoon hits May through September, bringing afternoon downpours and humidity. But here's the thing: the rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts. You can still sightsee if you time it right and carry an umbrella.
October and November see intermittent showers as the northeast monsoon begins. It's actually a lovely time to visit – fewer crowds, green landscapes, and hotels offer discounts.
Avoid the Esala Perahera festival in July/August unless you book months ahead. This 10-day celebration fills every hotel room and sends prices through the roof. But if you do make it, the procession of decorated elephants and traditional dancers is spectacular.
