Mafia Island in January

Good time to visit

January's wet weather makes it tricky for outdoor activities, but you'll have fewer crowds and lush green scenery. The rain is warm and the island feels alive, just be flexible with your plans.

Weather

January brings the heart of the wet season to Mafia Island. Expect frequent afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity around 80-85%. The trade winds provide some relief, but rain can disrupt boat trips and diving schedules.

January Tips

  • Pack a good rain jacket and waterproof bag for your camera
  • Book accommodation with covered terraces - you'll spend time waiting out storms
  • Diving visibility can be reduced, so focus on macro photography

All Months

June through November delivers Mafia's finest weather — dry skies, calm seas, and consistent trade winds. Water visibility peaks during these months, making it prime diving season. Whale sharks appear year-round but concentrate near Kilifi Wall from October through February. Sea turtle nesting happens from October to March on remote beaches. December and January bring crowds (by Mafia standards) and higher accommodation prices. March through May sees heavy rains that can ground flights and rough up seas — many lodges close entirely. The dry season also means better road conditions for reaching secluded beaches. Fishing is excellent from September through November when sailfish and marlin patrol deeper waters. But here's the trade-off: peak season means booking accommodations months in advance and paying premium prices. Shoulder months like June and November offer the best balance of good weather and reasonable rates.
