Oaxaca City in July

Not the best time

Guelaguetza makes July special despite being the rainiest month. You'll get soaked daily but witness Oaxaca's most important cultural festival with far fewer tourists.

Weather

July brings the wettest weather of the year with almost daily rainfall. The humidity becomes thick enough to cut with a machete, and storms can last hours instead of the usual brief downpours. Expect rain on 15+ days, sometimes starting as early as noon.

July Tips

  • Guelaguetza is THE event - book tickets and hotels months ahead despite the rain
  • Bring quick-dry clothes and extra socks
  • Flash floods can close mountain roads - have backup plans for day trips

All Months

October through April offers perfect weather — warm days, cool nights, and minimal rain. December and January see the most tourists but temperatures hover around 75°F during the day and drop to 50°F at night. Day of the Dead (November 1-2) transforms the city into a celebration of death and memory. Hotels book months ahead and prices triple, but the atmosphere is incredible. Families picnic in cemeteries, marigold petals cover the streets, and the entire city stays up all night. March brings Guelaguetza festival planning and perfect weather. April gets hot but manageable — expect 85°F days. Avoid May through September unless you love rain and humidity. The rainy season brings daily afternoon downpours that flood streets and trap you indoors. Some restaurants and shops close during the worst weeks in June and July.
