Outer Banks in December

Not the best time

December offers solitude and dramatic winter seascapes but limited dining and entertainment options. It's perfect for those seeking a quiet coastal retreat, but most visitors will find better value and experiences in other months.

Weather

December brings winter weather with cool days and cold nights, though rarely bitter cold due to ocean moderation. Rain increases and you might see occasional winter storms. Ocean temperature drops to 13°C, effectively ending swimming season for most.

Events & Festivals

  • Christmas celebrations and light displays
  • New Year's Eve parties in larger towns
  • Winter solstice beach walks become popular with locals

December Tips

  • Call ahead to verify business hours as many places close or reduce schedules
  • Pack warm, windproof clothing for beach walks
  • Consider staying in Nags Head or Duck where more businesses stay open year-round

All Months

May through October gives you the full OBX experience with warm water and all attractions open. July and August bring crowds and $200+ nightly rental rates, but also perfect beach weather and the best chance to spot wild horses. September is the sweet spot - fewer crowds, warm ocean, and hurricane season usually winds down after Labor Day. October offers excellent fishing and comfortable temperatures, though some restaurants close for the season. Spring arrives slowly here. May can still be chilly for swimming, but it's perfect for exploring without summer crowds. Winter transforms the OBX into something completely different - wild, windswept, and surprisingly beautiful. Many businesses close November through March, but you'll have miles of beach to yourself.
