Outer Banks in February
Not the best time
February offers rock-bottom prices but comes with the year's most unpredictable weather. It's the wettest month, and while temperatures are creeping up, you're still looking at a pretty bleak coastal landscape.
Weather
February continues the winter chill with slightly milder temperatures than January. Rain becomes more frequent as storm systems move through, and you might catch a rare snow flurry. The ocean remains too cold for swimming at around 11°C.

February Tips
- •Bring waterproof gear as February tends to be the rainiest month
- •Consider this month for bird watching - winter migrants are still around
- •Book restaurants for Valentine's Day weekend as the few open places fill up with locals
All Months
May through October gives you the full OBX experience with warm water and all attractions open. July and August bring crowds and $200+ nightly rental rates, but also perfect beach weather and the best chance to spot wild horses. September is the sweet spot - fewer crowds, warm ocean, and hurricane season usually winds down after Labor Day. October offers excellent fishing and comfortable temperatures, though some restaurants close for the season. Spring arrives slowly here. May can still be chilly for swimming, but it's perfect for exploring without summer crowds. Winter transforms the OBX into something completely different - wild, windswept, and surprisingly beautiful. Many businesses close November through March, but you'll have miles of beach to yourself.
