September Tips
- •Shoulder season begins - slightly better value than peak months
- •Last chance for optimal whale watching
- •Weather remains excellent but crowds start thinning
All Months
May through October is prime time in Port Vila. The trade winds keep temperatures comfortable around 26°C, and rainfall drops to manageable levels. This is peak season though, so accommodation prices jump and popular spots get crowded with Australian tourists escaping winter.
The shoulder months of April and November offer the best balance. You'll still get mostly sunny days, but with fewer crowds and better deals on hotels. Just be prepared for the occasional tropical shower - they're intense but brief, and the air afterward smells incredible.
Avoid January through March if possible. This is cyclone season, and while direct hits are rare, the weather can be unpredictable. Heavy rains turn dirt roads into mud pits, and some outer island excursions get cancelled. That said, if you do visit during the wet season, you'll have the place mostly to yourself and see the landscape at its most lush and dramatic.
