Great time to visit

Rio at its most expensive and crowded, but the energy is electric. New Year's Eve on Copacabana is legendary, but you'll pay premium prices for everything.

Weather

Peak summer heat hits Rio hard in January. Temperatures soar into the mid-30s with sticky humidity that makes it feel even hotter. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but brief, bringing temporary relief.

All Months

December through May is Rio's summer, which means beach weather, outdoor concerts, and Carnival season. But it also means rain showers that come out of nowhere and humidity that makes you question your life choices. January and February are peak tourist season — hotels cost double, beaches are packed, and you'll wait in line for everything. Carnival happens in February or March (it changes each year based on Easter), and the city transforms completely. If you're here for the party, book accommodation six months ahead and expect to pay premium prices for everything. The street parties (blocos) are free and more fun than the official parades anyway. March through May is the sweet spot. The weather's still warm enough for beaches, but the tourist crowds thin out and prices drop. You might catch some rain, but it usually passes quickly. June through August is Rio's winter, which means temperatures in the 70s and less humidity. Perfect for hiking and exploring the city, but the ocean gets chilly for swimming. Locals still go to the beaches — they just wear more clothes. September through November is spring, with warming weather and fewer crowds. It's ideal if you want to experience Rio without fighting for space on the sand.
