Samoa (Upolu) in January
Not the best time
January brings heavy rains and high humidity, making it tough for outdoor activities. The upside? Fewer tourists and lush green landscapes, plus you'll catch some local summer holiday energy.
Weather
January sits squarely in Samoa's wet season with high humidity and frequent afternoon downpours. Expect temperatures around 30°C during the day with nights staying warm at 24°C. The trade winds offer some relief, but you'll feel sticky most of the time.

All Months
May through October delivers Upolu's sweet spot — less rain, lower humidity, and trade winds that actually provide relief from the heat. Temperatures hover around 26-28°C, perfect for beach days without melting into a puddle.
The dry season coincides with whale watching season. Humpback whales pass through Samoan waters from June to October, and several operators run whale watching tours from Apia harbor. Success rates are highest in August and September.
Avoid November through April if you can — this is cyclone season, and while direct hits are rare, the weather can be unpredictable. The humidity becomes oppressive, and afternoon thunderstorms are almost guaranteed. That said, accommodation prices drop significantly, and you'll have beaches mostly to yourself.
June brings the Teuila Festival, Samoa's biggest cultural celebration. Hotels book up months in advance, but the traditional dancing, fire shows, and food stalls make it worth planning around. The festival runs for a week and showcases the best of Samoan culture.
December and January are popular with New Zealand and Australian families on summer holidays. Expect higher prices and crowded beaches, especially around Christmas and New Year.
