São Paulo in January

Not the best time

January is hot, humid, and wet - not São Paulo's finest hour. The city celebrates its birthday on the 25th, but you'll spend most of your time dodging raindrops and sweating through your clothes.

Weather

January hits you with sweltering heat and oppressive humidity that makes walking down Avenida Paulista feel like a sauna. The rainy season is in full swing, bringing heavy downpours that flood the streets and make traffic even worse than usual. Expect temperatures to soar during the day with little relief at night.

January Tips

  • Pack an umbrella and waterproof shoes - the streets flood quickly during downpours
  • Book restaurants early as many locals take extended holidays
  • Stay in neighborhoods with good metro access to avoid getting stuck in rain traffic

All Months

April through September is your sweet spot. The weather is cooler and drier, perfect for walking around the city without melting. July can get surprisingly chilly (bring a jacket), but it's also when the cultural calendar explodes — film festivals, art exhibitions, and music events everywhere. October through March is summer, which means heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms that can flood the streets. But the energy is electric during Carnaval season (February/March), even though São Paulo's celebration is more underground than Rio's. Avoid December and January if possible — half the city evacuates to the coast, and many restaurants close. The shoulder months of April and September offer the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds.
