Tauranga in August
Not the best time
August offers little improvement over July with cold, wet conditions continuing. Consider it only if you're budget-conscious or genuinely enjoy dramatic winter coastal scenery.
Weather
August continues winter's grip with similar temperatures to July - highs around 15°C and lows at 6°C. Rain remains frequent but you might catch glimpses of spring with the occasional clear, crisp day. Wind picks up, making it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

All Months
December through April delivers Tauranga at its finest. Summer temperatures hover around 24°C with minimal rain, and the beaches come alive with swimmers and surfers. But this is peak season – accommodation prices jump 40% and popular spots get crowded.
May and November offer the sweet spot for savvy travelers. You'll still get decent weather (18-22°C) with fewer crowds and shoulder season pricing. The ocean stays warm enough for swimming through May, though you might want a wetsuit by June.
Winter (June-August) isn't a write-off like other New Zealand destinations. Tauranga averages 15°C with plenty of clear days perfect for hiking Mount Maunganui or exploring downtown. You won't be swimming much, but accommodation costs drop dramatically.
Avoid late August and September – this is when Tauranga gets its worst weather. Spring storms roll through the Bay of Plenty, and temperatures can swing wildly. Wait until October when things settle down.
For surfers, March through May delivers the most consistent swells at Mount Maunganui Main Beach. The water's still warm from summer, but autumn storms generate better waves than the typically flat summer conditions.
