Tbilisi in January

Not the best time

January is budget-friendly but brutally cold. You'll have Narikala Fortress practically to yourself, but you might not want to climb up there in the snow.

Weather

January brings proper winter to Tbilisi with snow dusting the hills and temperatures rarely climbing above freezing. Expect gray skies most days and occasional snowfall that turns the cobblestones of Old Town slippery. The humidity stays low but the wind cuts through Rustaveli Avenue.

January Tips

  • Pack serious winter gear - thermal layers and waterproof boots are essential
  • Many restaurants close early or have limited hours, so plan dinner before 9pm
  • Hotel heating can be inconsistent - bring extra blankets or ask for more at check-in

All Months

April through June is sweet spot territory. The weather's mild, flowers are blooming in the botanical gardens, and you can walk around without melting. May hits particularly well — warm days, cool nights, and everything's green. September and October work too. You'll catch the grape harvest season, which means wine festivals and perfect temperatures for exploring. Summer gets brutal. July and August see temperatures pushing 35°C (95°F) with humidity that'll have you seeking shelter by noon. But here's the upside — this is when the outdoor bars and rooftop terraces really come alive. Winter isn't off-limits, just different. December through February brings occasional snow and temperatures around freezing. The sulfur baths feel even better when it's cold outside, and you'll have tourist sites mostly to yourself. Plus, winter is when locals really embrace the supra (feast) culture.
