Tehran in January

Good time to visit

January means fewer tourists and lower prices, but you'll be bundled up most of the time. The mountains look stunning with snow caps, and cozy teahouses become your best friend.

Weather

Tehran winters bring cold, crisp air with occasional snow dusting the Alborz Mountains. Expect mostly clear skies but pack layers – mornings can drop below freezing while afternoons warm up nicely. The air pollution gets trapped more easily during winter months, creating hazy days.

January Tips

  • Bring warm clothes for early morning and evening – the temperature swings are real
  • Air quality can be poor, so consider staying in northern neighborhoods like Elahieh
  • Many outdoor attractions have shorter hours, but museums are perfect weather refuges

All Months

Spring and fall are golden seasons when Tehran sheds its harsh reputation. April through May brings perfect weather and the city's parks burst with Persian New Year celebrations. October and November offer crisp mountain air and clear views of snow-capped peaks. Summer heat can be brutal — temperatures hit 40°C (104°F) and the smog gets worse. But summer also means fewer crowds and rock-bottom hotel prices. Winter brings snow to the mountains and surprisingly cold temperatures downtown. The ski season runs December through March, making it perfect for combining city exploration with slope time at Dizin or Shemshak resorts just two hours north.
