Tromsø in January

Great time to visit

Prime time for northern lights but brutal cold and darkness. You're here for the aurora, not the sunshine, and the crowds reflect that popularity.

Weather

Peak polar night with temperatures hovering around -4°C to -10°C. Snow covers everything, and you'll get maybe 2-3 hours of twilight around midday. Dry cold with occasional snowfall, but humidity stays low.

  • Stay in city center hotels to avoid expensive taxis in the dark

All Months

Tromsø operates on two completely different schedules. Northern Lights season runs from late September through March, with the darkest months — November through January — offering the best Aurora viewing. Temperatures hover around -5°C to -15°C, and you'll get about 4 hours of twilight daily in December. But the midnight sun season from May through July transforms everything. The sun circles the sky without setting from May 20 to July 22. Hiking trails open up. Festivals fill the streets. And you can kayak at 2 AM under golden light that never fades. October and April are shoulder seasons with fewer crowds but unpredictable weather. March offers the best of both worlds — still dark enough for Northern Lights but warmer temperatures around -2°C and longer days for outdoor activities.
