Yellowstone (Montana entrance) in February

Not the best time

February offers the same winter magic as January with marginally warmer temps. Still an extreme season that demands preparation but rewards with incredible solitude and wildlife.

Weather

February continues the deep freeze with slightly less brutal temperatures but still plenty of snow. Days start getting longer but you'll still see overnight lows around -15°C. Clear skies dominate when storms aren't rolling through.

February Tips

  • Winter wildlife photography workshops run from Gardiner - wolves are most active this month
  • Snowshoes or cross-country skis let you explore areas cars can't reach
  • Hot springs at Mammoth provide a warm refuge but dress in layers you can quickly shed

All Months

June through September gives you the full West Yellowstone experience. June can be muddy and cool, but wildlife is most active and crowds are manageable. July and August bring peak season chaos - book accommodations six months ahead and expect traffic delays. September is the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, fewer crowds, and elk bugling season begins. Winter transforms the town into a snowmobile hub from December through March. Most restaurants and shops close, but the few that stay open create a cozy, local atmosphere. Spring (April-May) is unpredictable - some years bring snow, others bring early wildflowers.
