Yellowstone (Montana entrance) in January

Not the best time

January is for hardcore winter enthusiasts only. The park transforms into a frozen wonderland but you'll need serious cold-weather preparation and most facilities are closed.

Weather

January brings brutal cold to the Montana entrance with temperatures regularly plunging below -20°C at night. Snow blankets everything and most park roads close except the northern route from Gardiner through Lamar Valley. Expect clear, crisp days but bone-chilling winds.

January Tips

  • Only the northern entrance at Gardiner stays open - book lodging in Gardiner or nearby Livingston
  • Pack serious winter gear including hand/foot warmers and layers for temps that can hit -30°C
  • Wildlife viewing in Lamar Valley is actually fantastic - wolves and bison are easier to spot against snow

All Months

June through September gives you the full West Yellowstone experience. June can be muddy and cool, but wildlife is most active and crowds are manageable. July and August bring peak season chaos - book accommodations six months ahead and expect traffic delays. September is the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, fewer crowds, and elk bugling season begins. Winter transforms the town into a snowmobile hub from December through March. Most restaurants and shops close, but the few that stay open create a cozy, local atmosphere. Spring (April-May) is unpredictable - some years bring snow, others bring early wildflowers.
