June through September offers the best weather — dry, breezy, and comfortable for walking Stone Town's alleys. Temperatures hover around 26°C, and the trade winds keep things bearable even at midday.
December through February works too, but it's hotter and more humid. The advantage? Fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices. Hotel rates drop by about 30% during these months.
Avoid March through May completely. The long rains turn Stone Town's streets into rivers, and half the restaurants close early. The spice tours get muddy and miserable.
Ramadan affects the city significantly since most residents are Muslim. Restaurants close during daylight hours, and the evening iftar meals create a special atmosphere in Forodhani Gardens. But daytime sightseeing becomes more challenging.
The Zanzibar International Film Festival happens in July and transforms Stone Town into an outdoor cinema. Screenings take place in the Old Fort and various rooftops around the city. Book accommodation early during festival weeks.
