Zanzibar City in May
Not the best time
The wettest month with the highest humidity makes this the least comfortable time to visit. Rock-bottom prices reflect the challenging conditions.
Weather
May brings the peak of long rains with frequent heavy downpours and oppressive humidity. The air feels thick and sticky most days. Rain can be unpredictable - sometimes gentle, sometimes torrential.

All Months
June through September offers the best weather — dry, breezy, and comfortable for walking Stone Town's alleys. Temperatures hover around 26°C, and the trade winds keep things bearable even at midday.
December through February works too, but it's hotter and more humid. The advantage? Fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices. Hotel rates drop by about 30% during these months.
Avoid March through May completely. The long rains turn Stone Town's streets into rivers, and half the restaurants close early. The spice tours get muddy and miserable.
Ramadan affects the city significantly since most residents are Muslim. Restaurants close during daylight hours, and the evening iftar meals create a special atmosphere in Forodhani Gardens. But daytime sightseeing becomes more challenging.
The Zanzibar International Film Festival happens in July and transforms Stone Town into an outdoor cinema. Screenings take place in the Old Fort and various rooftops around the city. Book accommodation early during festival weeks.
