Arugam Bay in December

Not the best time

December means monsoon season is in full swing. Skip Arugam Bay entirely unless you're specifically here for bird watching at Kumana or don't mind constant rain.

Weather

December delivers full monsoon conditions with heavy, sustained rainfall and high humidity around 80%. Northeast winds create choppy, blown-out surf conditions. Ocean turns murky brown from river runoff.

December Tips

  • Many businesses close for renovations during this period
  • Consider staying in Batticaloa or Trincomalee instead
  • Perfect time for exploring Sri Lanka's cultural sites inland

All Months

April through September is surf season, and that's when Arugam Bay comes alive. The waves are consistent, the weather's dry, and everything's open. But it's also crowded and expensive by Sri Lankan standards. May and June are the sweet spot - waves are still firing, but the crowds thin out after Easter holidays. You'll get better deals on accommodation and actually have space on the beach. Here's what nobody tells you: October through March is monsoon season on the east coast. Most surf camps close, half the restaurants shut down, and it can rain for days. But if you're not here for waves, this is when you'll have the place almost to yourself. Avoid April if you hate crowds. It's Easter holiday season for Sri Lankans, and the bay gets packed with families and domestic tourists.
