Banff in April

Not the best time

Mud season hits Banff hard in April - not quite winter, not quite spring, just slushy and brown. Skip this month unless you're getting serious hotel deals and don't mind limited outdoor activities.

Weather

April brings the messy transition period with highs around 9°C but lows still freezing at -2°C. Rain increases to about 8 days, often mixed with late season snow. The mountains remain snow-covered while the town starts showing patches of brown grass.

April Tips

  • Many hiking trails remain closed due to snow and avalanche risk
  • Bring waterproof boots - sidewalks and paths get muddy
  • Some attractions have reduced hours before summer season kicks in

All Months

Summer means crowds but also the best hiking weather. July and August see temperatures in the 70s, perfect for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, but expect traffic jams and $400+ hotel rates. September brings fewer people, golden aspens, and crisp mornings – probably the sweet spot. Winter transforms Banff into a snowy wonderland with three ski areas: Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay. December through February brings reliable snow and temperatures around 15°F, perfect for skiing but brutal for sightseeing. March offers spring skiing with longer days. Avoid April and May – it's mud season with unpredictable weather and many mountain roads still closed.
