Banff in January
Great time to visit
January is winter wonderland territory with frozen waterfalls and pristine snow, but you'll need serious cold weather gear. The trade-off? Lower hotel rates and some of the most beautiful winter scenery you'll ever see.
Weather
January hits Banff with proper Canadian winter - temperatures regularly drop to -20°C or colder, especially at night. Snow blankets everything, and you'll get around 15-20 snowy days this month. The air is crisp and dry, with low humidity that makes the cold feel more manageable than you'd expect.

January Tips
- •Rent ice cleats for your boots - sidewalks get slippery fast
- •Book ice walks on Johnston Canyon early, they sell out
- •Layer properly with wool base layers, not cotton
All Months
Summer means crowds but also the best hiking weather. July and August see temperatures in the 70s, perfect for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, but expect traffic jams and $400+ hotel rates. September brings fewer people, golden aspens, and crisp mornings – probably the sweet spot. Winter transforms Banff into a snowy wonderland with three ski areas: Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay. December through February brings reliable snow and temperatures around 15°F, perfect for skiing but brutal for sightseeing. March offers spring skiing with longer days. Avoid April and May – it's mud season with unpredictable weather and many mountain roads still closed.
