Banff in October

Not the best time

October gambles with weather but rewards visitors with golden larch trees and thinner crowds. Come prepared for anything from snow to sunshine, sometimes in the same day.

Weather

October turns properly cold with highs of 11°C and lows hitting -2°C. Rain increases to 7 days but snow starts appearing at higher elevations. Weather becomes unpredictable - you might get Indian summer warmth or early winter storms.

Events & Festivals

  • Peak larch season

October Tips

  • Larch season peaks mid-month - Moraine Lake Road may close by month's end
  • Pack for winter conditions even if forecast looks mild
  • Many seasonal businesses start closing or reducing hours

All Months

Summer means crowds but also the best hiking weather. July and August see temperatures in the 70s, perfect for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, but expect traffic jams and $400+ hotel rates. September brings fewer people, golden aspens, and crisp mornings – probably the sweet spot. Winter transforms Banff into a snowy wonderland with three ski areas: Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mount Norquay. December through February brings reliable snow and temperatures around 15°F, perfect for skiing but brutal for sightseeing. March offers spring skiing with longer days. Avoid April and May – it's mud season with unpredictable weather and many mountain roads still closed.
