Comoros Islands in December

Not the best time

December is when the islands start showing their difficult side again. Holiday festivities provide some distraction, but the returning rains and humidity make this a challenging month to visit.

Weather

December signals the return of the wet season with frequent heavy downpours and climbing humidity levels. Temperatures rise uncomfortably, and the air becomes thick and sticky. Storm systems begin affecting inter-island transportation.

  • Pack for hot, humid, and wet conditions
  • Holiday celebrations offer cultural experiences despite poor weather

All Months

The dry season from May to October delivers the best weather, with temperatures around 25°C (77°F) and minimal rainfall. This is peak season for hiking Karthala volcano – the trails are passable and the views aren't obscured by clouds. Flights and hotels cost about 20% more during these months. July through September brings the best diving conditions, with calm seas and excellent visibility. But it's also when French tourists arrive for their summer holidays, so book accommodation early. The ylang-ylang flowers bloom during this period, filling the air with their intoxicating perfume. Avoid January through March unless you enjoy tropical storms. The cyclone season brings heavy rains, rough seas, and occasional flight cancellations. Hotels often close for maintenance during February. But if you can handle the weather, you'll have the islands almost entirely to yourself, and prices drop by up to 40%.
