All Months
July through September offers your best shot at clear roads and good weather. July brings wildflowers and full access to Rim Drive, but also peak crowds. August continues the busy season with warm days and cool nights — perfect for camping.
September is the sweet spot. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, but weather stays mild through the month. You might catch early fall colors in the surrounding forest, and morning temperatures are crisp but not frigid.
June can be beautiful if you don't mind some road closures. The north entrance often stays closed until mid-month, and parts of Rim Drive might be inaccessible. But you'll have fewer crowds and possible snow-capped peaks reflecting in the lake.
Winter transforms Crater Lake into a different world entirely. Only the south entrance stays open, and you'll need snowshoes or cross-country skis to explore. The Rim Village area offers winter programs, and seeing the lake surrounded by snow is genuinely magical — just dress for sub-zero temperatures.
