Crater Lake in May
Good time to visit
May offers the first real taste of visiting Crater Lake as the park awakens from winter. Roads start opening and you can finally access more of the rim, though snow lingers in many areas.
Weather
May sees real progress as snow melts rapidly and temperatures climb into more comfortable ranges. However, snow patches persist on trails and Rim Drive usually doesn't fully open until late May or early June. Expect afternoon rain showers.

- •Wildflowers start blooming at lower elevations but rim area stays snow-covered
All Months
July through September offers your best shot at clear roads and good weather. July brings wildflowers and full access to Rim Drive, but also peak crowds. August continues the busy season with warm days and cool nights — perfect for camping.
September is the sweet spot. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, but weather stays mild through the month. You might catch early fall colors in the surrounding forest, and morning temperatures are crisp but not frigid.
June can be beautiful if you don't mind some road closures. The north entrance often stays closed until mid-month, and parts of Rim Drive might be inaccessible. But you'll have fewer crowds and possible snow-capped peaks reflecting in the lake.
Winter transforms Crater Lake into a different world entirely. Only the south entrance stays open, and you'll need snowshoes or cross-country skis to explore. The Rim Village area offers winter programs, and seeing the lake surrounded by snow is genuinely magical — just dress for sub-zero temperatures.
