Flic en Flac in January

Not the best time

January tests your tolerance for tropical weather extremes. You'll get decent hotel rates, but the constant threat of storms and oppressive humidity makes this month challenging for beach lovers.

Weather

January brings Mauritius' wettest and hottest weather. Expect high humidity, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and temperatures that make you want to stay in air conditioning. The cyclone season is in full swing, so check weather forecasts obsessively.

January Tips

  • Pack lightweight rain gear and quick-dry clothes
  • Book accommodations with good drainage - some hotels flood
  • Keep emergency supplies handy during cyclone warnings

All Months

May through October gives you the best weather – dry, sunny, and those famous trade winds keep things comfortable even when temperatures hit 28°C. This is Mauritius' winter, but winter here means perfect beach weather everywhere else. July and August get busy with European visitors escaping their summer heat, so book accommodation early. The shoulder months of May and October offer the sweet spot – great weather, fewer crowds, and better hotel rates. Avoid January through March if possible. That's cyclone season, and even if no storms hit directly, you'll deal with humidity, rain, and rough seas that make swimming less pleasant. The water temperature stays around 24°C year-round, so it's always swimmable when conditions allow. December can work if you don't mind occasional afternoon showers and higher prices during the European holiday season.
