Gulf Shores in December

Not the best time

December offers budget-friendly rates and holiday events, but the weather rarely cooperates for traditional beach vacations. Come for the deals and coastal charm, not the swimming.

Weather

December settles into cool, often gray weather with highs in the upper 60s and chilly nights in the 40s. Rain is frequent, and overcast skies are common. The Gulf water becomes too cold for most swimmers, though the beach remains nice for bundled-up walks.

Events & Festivals

  • New Year's Eve beach celebrations

December Tips

  • Christmas week brings higher prices despite off-season weather
  • Pack warm clothes for evening events and beach walks
  • Many restaurants and attractions have reduced winter hours

All Months

April through May offers the sweet spot — warm enough for swimming (water hits 70°F), smaller crowds, and reasonable hotel rates. Azaleas bloom throughout Gulf State Park, and you can actually find parking at popular beaches. Summer brings peak crowds and peak prices. June through August sees water temperatures in the low 80s, but also wall-to-wall people and $300+ nightly condo rates. Book way ahead if you're coming during this window. September and October deliver the best weather. Hurricane season keeps some visitors away, but most storms miss the area. Water stays warm through October, and you'll have beaches mostly to yourself. Winter is mild but unpredictable. Some years you get 70-degree days in January. Others bring cold snaps that make beach time miserable. Most restaurants and attractions scale back hours.
