Good time to visit

The wet season keeps most tourists away, but there's something moody and beautiful about rain-soaked temple roofs. Just be prepared to spend time indoors.

Weather

June marks the start of rainy season (tsuyu) with about 12-13 heavy rain days. Humidity climbs significantly, making temple stairs more challenging. Temperatures are pleasant when it's not pouring.

June Tips

  • Pack serious rain gear - not just umbrellas
  • Indoor attractions like museums become more appealing
  • Temple visits between rain showers can be atmospheric with mist

All Months

Spring and fall offer the best weather for temple hopping. Cherry blossoms peak in early April, turning the hillside temples into something from a postcard. But here's the thing – everyone knows this, so expect crowds. Late May through early June brings perfect temperatures without the tourist buses. The rainy season starts in mid-June, making temple steps slippery and outdoor activities less appealing. Autumn colors arrive in November, painting the maple trees around Senkoji Temple in brilliant reds. The weather stays mild enough for comfortable walking, and the summer crowds have gone home. Winter can be surprisingly harsh, with occasional snow making the temple walk treacherous.
