Saint-Malo in April

Good time to visit

April marks Saint-Malo's awakening from winter hibernation. The city shakes off its gray mood and restaurants reopen their terraces, though you might still need that sweater.

Weather

April delivers proper spring weather with longer, brighter days and warming temperatures. Rain still visits regularly but comes in quick showers rather than day-long soaks. The sea begins to lose its winter fury.

April Tips

  • Pack a light waterproof - spring showers come without warning
  • Book ahead for Easter weekend - French families descend
  • April's big tides create spectacular shows against the ramparts

All Months

May through September gives you the best weather, but each month feels different. May and June are perfect - mild temperatures around 18°C, fewer crowds, and everything's open. The rampart walks are gorgeous when spring flowers bloom in the parks below. July and August bring warm weather (22°C average) but also peak crowds and prices. The old town gets packed by midday. If you're coming in summer, stay late into evening when day-trippers leave and locals reclaim their city. September is ideal if you can swing it. Weather stays warm enough for beach walks, crowds thin out, and restaurants offer better service. The light in September makes those granite walls glow golden at sunset. Winter has its own charm but half the restaurants close and weather gets rough. January storms are dramatic to watch from the ramparts, but bring serious rain gear.
