Thimphu in January
Good time to visit
January rewards hardy travelers with empty temples, stunning Himalayan views, and rock-bottom prices. Just be ready to bundle up like you're heading to the Arctic, because Thimphu doesn't mess around with winter.
Weather
January brings Thimphu's coldest weather with crisp, dry air and brilliant blue skies most days. Temperatures drop well below freezing at night, and you'll see frost coating the prayer flags. Snow occasionally dusts the city, though it rarely sticks around long.

All Months
March through May gives you clear mountain views and rhododendrons blooming like nature's confetti. Temperatures hover around 60-70°F during the day, perfect for walking around without sweating through your clothes. September to November is peak season for good reason – crisp air, brilliant blue skies, and comfortable temperatures. But expect crowds during Thimphu Tshechu festival in September or October. The festival is incredible – masked dances, colorful costumes, and half the country showing up – but hotel prices double and rooms disappear. Winter months get cold. Really cold. January temperatures drop to the 20s at night, though sunny days warm up nicely. Summer brings monsoon rains that turn streets into rivers and mountains into clouds. June through August means umbrellas, mud, and limited mountain views. Look, if you're coming for one of the festivals, book months ahead and expect to pay more for everything.
