Thimphu in July

Not the best time

July ranks as Thimphu's most challenging month for visitors. Rock-bottom prices can't compensate for the constant rain, blocked views, and general soggy misery that defines monsoon peak.

Weather

July continues the monsoon assault with even more intense rainfall and suffocating humidity. Expect daily downpours that can last for hours, turning the city into a steamy, green greenhouse. Cloud cover blocks mountain views for days at a time.

July Tips

  • Seriously consider postponing your trip unless you love rain
  • Book accommodations with good drainage - flooding happens
  • Stock up on entertainment for inevitable indoor days

All Months

March through May gives you clear mountain views and rhododendrons blooming like nature's confetti. Temperatures hover around 60-70°F during the day, perfect for walking around without sweating through your clothes. September to November is peak season for good reason – crisp air, brilliant blue skies, and comfortable temperatures. But expect crowds during Thimphu Tshechu festival in September or October. The festival is incredible – masked dances, colorful costumes, and half the country showing up – but hotel prices double and rooms disappear. Winter months get cold. Really cold. January temperatures drop to the 20s at night, though sunny days warm up nicely. Summer brings monsoon rains that turn streets into rivers and mountains into clouds. June through August means umbrellas, mud, and limited mountain views. Look, if you're coming for one of the festivals, book months ahead and expect to pay more for everything.
