Viareggio in January
Not the best time
January is Viareggio at its most local and least touristy. Perfect for off-season rates and authentic Tuscan winter life, but definitely not a beach holiday.
Weather
January brings cold, damp weather to this Tuscan coast. Temperatures hover around 9°C during the day, dropping to 3°C at night. Rain falls frequently, making beach walks more about bundling up than soaking up sun.

January Tips
- •Many beachfront restaurants and bars close for the season - stick to Via Regia for dining options
- •Pack waterproof shoes for walking the lungomare
- •Hotel rates drop to their lowest, but check if amenities like pools are operational
All Months
May through September works, but each month feels different. May is perfect if you hate crowds — warm enough for the beach (water's still chilly though), restaurants open, and you'll have the promenade mostly to yourself. June and September hit the sweet spot: warm water, fewer families, and everything's open without the August insanity. July and August are peak season for good reason — water's warmest, beach clubs buzz with energy, and the nightlife actually exists. But expect crowds, higher prices, and zero chance of spontaneous dinner reservations. Here's the thing about winter: most beach clubs close, half the restaurants shut down, and it rains. A lot. The famous Carnival happens in February and March, which sounds romantic until you're standing in the rain watching papier-mâché floats. Go in shoulder season if you can swing it.
