Victoria Falls in January

Not the best time

The falls are absolutely thunderous but you'll be drenched within minutes of arriving. Great for dramatic photos, terrible for actually seeing the rock face behind all that water.

Weather

Peak rainy season brings daily downpours and oppressive humidity. The falls roar at maximum power, creating massive spray clouds that soak everything within 2km. Temperatures hover around 26-30°C with stifling 80%+ humidity.

January Tips

  • Pack serious waterproof gear - cheap ponchos won't cut it
  • Book helicopter flights early morning before afternoon storms roll in
  • Stay on the Zambian side if you want clearer views through the spray

All Months

April through September gives you the sweet spot between water volume and visibility. May and June offer the most dramatic views — the Zambezi is still swollen from rainy season, but the mist doesn't completely obscure the falls yet. You'll get soaked, but you'll see everything. July through September brings lower water levels and clearer views. This is prime time for photography since the mist doesn't dominate every shot. The famous Devil's Pool on the Zambian side is only accessible during these low-water months — swimming on the edge of the falls isn't possible when the river is raging. October through March is low water season. The falls split into separate streams, and you can see the rock face behind the water. It's less dramatic but more intimate. The weather is also hottest during these months — temperatures hit 35°C regularly. But this is when you can walk across parts of the riverbed that are underwater the rest of the year.
