Byron Bay sits on Bundjalung Country. The Arakwal Bumberbin Peoples of the Bundjalung Nation have lived here for over 22,000 years, and locals take that seriously. There's a big alternative scene, wellness culture, and surf identity all tangled together.

You'll find serious surfers, long-term hippies, digital nomads, and the kind of weekender from Sydney who has somehow spent $600 on a single dinner. It's all coexisting, sometimes awkwardly. The town draws over two million visitors a year to a place with a population of around 9,000 — so yes, tension between tourism and community is real.

Locals genuinely appreciate it when you're here to engage, not just Instagram.

Always swim between the red and yellow flags — rips are serious at Byron's beaches and have cost lives. This is not optional advice.. Don't swim at night.

Full stop. Rip tides and reduced visibility are a real danger, and it happens more often than it should with tourists.. Respect the line-up in the surf.

Dropping in on someone else's wave is a quick way to start trouble at any break.. The Byron Farmers Market on Butler Street Reserve runs Thursday mornings from around 6:30am — arrive early for the best produce and a seat on the beanbags for live music.. The town has a strong eco-consciousness.

BYO bags, skip the single-use plastic, don't leave rubbish on the beach. Locals notice.. Schoolies Week hits Byron hard at the end of November and early December.

If you aren't a recent school leaver, it's worth noting when booking.. Parking in the town centre is a legitimate headache. Meters are strict and spaces vanish fast in summer.

Bike or walk if you can.. Stone & Wood's Pacific Ale — called a 'Stonie' by locals — is the unofficial beer of Byron Bay. Ordering one at The Rails is basically a rite of passage.

Byron Bay is genuinely safe by most measures — low crime, active police presence, and a community that mostly looks out for each other. That said, a few things actually matter here. The ocean is the biggest real hazard.

Rips are powerful and claim lives every few years, almost always involving visitors who didn't swim between the flags or who went in at night. Do not swim at night. Full stop.

During the day, stick to patrolled beaches and watch for rip indicators — darker, choppier water between calmer patches. If you get caught in a rip, don't fight it. Float and signal for help.

Petty theft happens in crowded areas — don't leave your phone or wallet on a beach towel unattended. Nightlife can get rowdy around Cheeky Monkey's and the main strip on weekends; walk home in groups if it's late. Eastern brown snakes live in the hinterland and surrounding bush.

They're venomous and fast — give any snake you encounter a wide berth and don't try to handle or photograph it up close. Uber availability drops late on weekend nights, so book early or plan ahead if you're out past midnight.

Byron Bay is compact — the centre is walkable and bikeable. That's actually the best way to get around town. Rental bikes are everywhere, helmets are legally required in NSW, and the flat terrain makes it genuinely pleasant.

For longer trips into the hinterland or to neighbouring towns like Bangalow or Mullumbimby, you'll want a car. The Byron Bay Solar Train is a legitimate charmer — a restored 1949-era two-carriage heritage train running on solar power, connecting the town centre with North Beach and the Arts Estate in about 10 minutes each way. It carries bikes and surfboards for free and runs 364 days a year.

Well worth a ride. Getting to Byron: Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) is 30 minutes south. Rex, Jetstar, and Virgin fly direct from Sydney and Melbourne.

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is about 45–60 minutes north and has far more flights, including international routes. From Gold Coast, pre-book a shuttle or transfer — Uber is patchy on that stretch and rideshare isn't reliable. Greyhound and Premier Motor Service run coastal bus routes with Byron stops.

Local Blanch's Bus Service connects Byron to Ballina, Lennox Head, Brunswick Heads, and Mullumbimby — handy for day trips, but check timetables carefully as services are infrequent. Book any bus or shuttle out of Byron in advance — seats fill up fast, especially on long weekends and festival dates. Taxis are limited.

Uber works in town but surges badly on weekend nights.
