Badlands National Park in December

Not the best time

December is for serious winter adventurers only. The park transforms into a frozen wilderness that's beautiful but potentially deadly for unprepared visitors.

Weather

December brings full winter conditions with snow, ice, and bitter cold dominating the landscape. Temperatures rarely climb above freezing, and wind chill makes outdoor activities genuinely dangerous. Snowstorms can close roads without warning.

December Tips

  • Emergency supplies are essential - storms can trap visitors
  • Road conditions change hourly during snow events
  • Consider this a winter survival experience, not a casual visit

All Months

May through October gives you the best weather and all facilities open. Summer temperatures hit 100°F regularly, but the low humidity makes it bearable. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography and cooler hiking conditions. September and October are ideal – fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures, and the prairie grasses turn golden. Winter closes most facilities, but if you can handle the cold, you'll have the place to yourself. Spring can be muddy and unpredictable. Avoid holiday weekends if possible – this place gets surprisingly busy.
