Badlands National Park in January
Not the best time
January is for hardcore winter lovers only. The park is hauntingly beautiful under snow, but you'll likely have it almost entirely to yourself for good reason.
Weather
January brings brutal cold to the Badlands with daytime highs barely creeping above freezing. Snow covers the rock formations and prairie, creating stark beauty but making many trails impassable. Expect bitter winds that make the already frigid temperatures feel even more bone-chilling.

January Tips
- •Pack serious winter gear - the wind chill can be deadly
- •Many visitor facilities are closed, so stock up on supplies in Wall
- •Consider microspikes for icy trails if you're determined to hike
All Months
May through October gives you the best weather and all facilities open. Summer temperatures hit 100°F regularly, but the low humidity makes it bearable. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography and cooler hiking conditions. September and October are ideal – fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures, and the prairie grasses turn golden. Winter closes most facilities, but if you can handle the cold, you'll have the place to yourself. Spring can be muddy and unpredictable. Avoid holiday weekends if possible – this place gets surprisingly busy.
