Badlands National Park in February
Not the best time
Still brutally cold but marginally more manageable than January. The winter landscapes are stunning, but you'll need serious cold-weather experience to enjoy them safely.
Weather
February continues the deep freeze with slightly less snow but equally bitter winds. Temperatures remain well below freezing most days, though you might catch a brief warm spell that melts some ice. The famous prairie wind makes everything feel 10 degrees colder than it actually is.

February Tips
- •Check road conditions constantly - Highway 240 can close without warning
- •Sunrise and sunset photos are incredible with snow-covered buttes
- •Stay in Rapid City and day-trip rather than camping
All Months
May through October gives you the best weather and all facilities open. Summer temperatures hit 100°F regularly, but the low humidity makes it bearable. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography and cooler hiking conditions. September and October are ideal – fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures, and the prairie grasses turn golden. Winter closes most facilities, but if you can handle the cold, you'll have the place to yourself. Spring can be muddy and unpredictable. Avoid holiday weekends if possible – this place gets surprisingly busy.
