Badlands National Park in July

Great time to visit

Peak season means peak crowds and peak prices, but also peak access to programs and facilities. The heat is brutal during midday, so plan your schedule accordingly.

Weather

July brings the year's hottest weather with blazing sun and minimal shade across the formations. Temperatures regularly exceed 30°C, and the exposed trails become furnaces by midday. Evening thunderstorms provide dramatic light shows and brief cooling.

Events & Festivals

  • Fourth of July weekend brings maximum crowds
  • Annual Badlands astronomy programs peak during new moon phases

July Tips

  • Hike before 8 AM or after 6 PM to avoid dangerous heat
  • Carry twice the water you think you need
  • Book everything months in advance - accommodations sell out

All Months

May through October gives you the best weather and all facilities open. Summer temperatures hit 100°F regularly, but the low humidity makes it bearable. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography and cooler hiking conditions. September and October are ideal – fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures, and the prairie grasses turn golden. Winter closes most facilities, but if you can handle the cold, you'll have the place to yourself. Spring can be muddy and unpredictable. Avoid holiday weekends if possible – this place gets surprisingly busy.
