Lahaina in January
Not the best time
Whale season makes January special, but you'll pay peak prices for the privilege. The weather's pleasant enough, though not Maui's finest. Good month if you're chasing humpbacks and don't mind crowds.
Weather
January brings Lahaina's coolest temperatures, though 'cool' is relative in Maui. Trade winds can be strong, making the water choppy for snorkeling. Humidity drops to comfortable levels, but you'll still catch occasional light showers.

January Tips
- •Book whale watching tours early - humpback season peaks now
- •Pack a light jacket for evening strolls along Front Street
- •Expect higher hotel rates but fewer locals competing for restaurant tables
All Months
April through June gives you the sweet spot – fewer crowds, lower prices, and perfect weather. Hotel rates drop significantly after Easter, and you'll actually find parking spaces in town. Ocean temperatures hover around 78 degrees, ideal for snorkeling at Molokini Crater.
September through November offers another excellent window. Hurricane season technically runs through November, but storms rarely impact Maui directly. The trade winds keep temperatures comfortable, and you'll avoid both summer crowds and winter whale watching masses.
Winter brings humpback whales to Maui's waters, making December through March prime time for whale watching tours. But expect crowds, especially around holidays. Hotel rates spike during Christmas and New Year's weeks – we're talking $600+ per night at mid-range properties. The upside? Surf's up on the north shore, and temperatures rarely exceed 85 degrees.
