Marfa in August
Not the best time
Another month for dedicated heat lovers or people with specific indoor agendas. The art galleries provide blessed relief, but outdoor exploration becomes genuinely difficult.
Weather
August continues July's brutal heat pattern but adds more frequent monsoon thunderstorms. Afternoons feel like standing in front of an oven, and humidity spikes when storms roll through. The saving grace: spectacular lightning shows across the vast sky.

August Tips
- •Dawn and dusk become your only outdoor windows - embrace the indoor art scene
- •Download weather radar apps - monsoon storms develop quickly and dramatically
- •Hotel pools feel like bath water, but they're still better than standing in the sun
All Months
October through April offers the best weather in this high desert climate. Daytime temperatures hover in the 60s-70s, perfect for walking between galleries and outdoor installations.
Winter months (December-February) can get surprisingly cold at night – temperatures drop into the 20s-30s. But sunny days remain pleasant, and you'll have the town mostly to yourself.
Spring (March-April) brings wildflowers to the surrounding desert and ideal weather conditions. This is peak season for good reason.
Summer is brutal. June through August sees temperatures regularly hit 100°F with intense sun and little shade. Most outdoor art installations become uncomfortable to visit during midday hours.
Special events drive accommodation prices up. The Marfa Myths music festival (April) and various art openings throughout the year create mini-rush periods.
Monsoon season (July-September) brings afternoon thunderstorms that can flood low-lying areas and make dirt roads impassable. But the lightning shows are spectacular.
