Great time to visit

Peak art season without the crowds or heat. The desert landscape looks stunning under winter light, and you'll have the Chinati Foundation almost to yourself.

Weather

January brings crisp, dry desert air with brilliant blue skies most days. You'll get those classic West Texas temperature swings - freezing mornings that warm up to pleasant afternoons. Humidity stays low, making even chilly days feel comfortable.

January Tips

  • Pack layers - you'll need a heavy jacket for morning gallery walks but can shed it by lunch
  • Hotel rates drop to their lowest, making it prime time for budget-conscious art lovers
  • Many restaurants close early or take winter breaks, so check hours before heading out

All Months

October through April offers the best weather in this high desert climate. Daytime temperatures hover in the 60s-70s, perfect for walking between galleries and outdoor installations. Winter months (December-February) can get surprisingly cold at night – temperatures drop into the 20s-30s. But sunny days remain pleasant, and you'll have the town mostly to yourself. Spring (March-April) brings wildflowers to the surrounding desert and ideal weather conditions. This is peak season for good reason. Summer is brutal. June through August sees temperatures regularly hit 100°F with intense sun and little shade. Most outdoor art installations become uncomfortable to visit during midday hours. Special events drive accommodation prices up. The Marfa Myths music festival (April) and various art openings throughout the year create mini-rush periods. Monsoon season (July-September) brings afternoon thunderstorms that can flood low-lying areas and make dirt roads impassable. But the lightning shows are spectacular.
