Richmond in August
Not the best time
August is Richmond's least pleasant month for visitors. The combination of heat, humidity, and frequent storms makes outdoor exploration miserable.
Weather
August continues July's oppressive heat and humidity with little relief. This is Richmond's most uncomfortable month, with heat indexes regularly exceeding 100°F. Afternoon thunderstorms provide temporary cooling but add to the humidity.

All Months
April and May offer perfect weather and blooming dogwoods throughout the city. September and October bring comfortable temperatures and fall colors along the James River. Summer gets sticky — July and August see temperatures in the 90s with humidity that makes walking feel like swimming. But summer also means outdoor concerts at Maymont Park and river activities. Winter rarely sees snow, but January and February feel gray and damp. Spring comes early here, usually by mid-March. Fall festivals happen throughout October, including the Richmond Folk Festival and Oktoberfest celebrations. Hotel prices peak during VCU graduation in May and when the Richmond Marathon takes over downtown in November. The sweet spot? Late April through early June, then September through mid-November. You'll get good weather without the summer crowds or winter dreariness.
