Richmond in May
Great time to visit
May competes with October for Richmond's best month. Perfect weather, blooming gardens, and outdoor events make this peak season for good reason.
Weather
May offers some of Richmond's most perfect weather - warm but not hot, with low humidity and gentle breezes. Rain becomes less frequent, and the city stays green from April showers. Ideal conditions for walking and outdoor dining.

All Months
April and May offer perfect weather and blooming dogwoods throughout the city. September and October bring comfortable temperatures and fall colors along the James River. Summer gets sticky — July and August see temperatures in the 90s with humidity that makes walking feel like swimming. But summer also means outdoor concerts at Maymont Park and river activities. Winter rarely sees snow, but January and February feel gray and damp. Spring comes early here, usually by mid-March. Fall festivals happen throughout October, including the Richmond Folk Festival and Oktoberfest celebrations. Hotel prices peak during VCU graduation in May and when the Richmond Marathon takes over downtown in November. The sweet spot? Late April through early June, then September through mid-November. You'll get good weather without the summer crowds or winter dreariness.
