Richmond in January
Good time to visit
January is Richmond at its quietest and cheapest. The weather isn't great, but you'll have the city mostly to yourself and hotel rates drop significantly.
Weather
January brings cold, damp winter weather to Richmond. Temperatures hover around freezing most days, with occasional snow flurries but rarely significant accumulation. The humidity stays high, making it feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

All Months
April and May offer perfect weather and blooming dogwoods throughout the city. September and October bring comfortable temperatures and fall colors along the James River. Summer gets sticky — July and August see temperatures in the 90s with humidity that makes walking feel like swimming. But summer also means outdoor concerts at Maymont Park and river activities. Winter rarely sees snow, but January and February feel gray and damp. Spring comes early here, usually by mid-March. Fall festivals happen throughout October, including the Richmond Folk Festival and Oktoberfest celebrations. Hotel prices peak during VCU graduation in May and when the Richmond Marathon takes over downtown in November. The sweet spot? Late April through early June, then September through mid-November. You'll get good weather without the summer crowds or winter dreariness.
