Skopje in March

Good time to visit

March is transition month in Skopje - not quite winter, not quite spring. The weather can be unpredictable, but you'll start seeing the city wake up from its winter hibernation.

Weather

March brings the first hints of spring with gradually warming temperatures and longer days. Snow becomes less frequent but rain increases as winter transitions to spring. Expect muddy conditions as snow melts throughout the city.

March Tips

  • Pack layers as temperatures can swing 15 degrees between morning and afternoon
  • Waterproof shoes are essential for navigating muddy streets and melting snow
  • March marks the start of café season - outdoor terraces begin reopening

All Months

April through June gives you perfect weather without the summer heat that can hit 35°C. The city comes alive after the harsh Balkan winter, and café terraces reopen along the Vardar. September and October might be even better. Temperatures hover around 20°C, summer crowds disappear, and the surrounding mountains show off their autumn colors. Plus, restaurant terraces stay busy until late October. Winter (December-February) sees temperatures drop to -5°C, but Christmas markets pop up in Macedonia Square. Hotels cut rates in half, and you'll have the Old Bazaar mostly to yourself. Just pack layers. Skip July and August unless you love sweating through sightseeing. The concrete and marble of the city center creates a heat island effect. Locals flee to Lake Ohrid, leaving restaurants with reduced hours. Look, any time works if you're on a budget. Even peak summer hotel rates rarely exceed €60 per night for decent places.
