Great time to visit

May is arguably Skopje's finest month. Warm but not hot days, minimal rain, and the city buzzing with energy as outdoor life resumes in full swing.

Weather

May offers some of Skopje's most pleasant weather with warm days and cool evenings. Rainfall decreases significantly compared to April. Perfect temperature for walking the old bazaar and sitting at outdoor restaurants along Macedonia Street.

May Tips

  • May is ideal for day trips to Ohrid - the weather is perfect and summer crowds haven't arrived
  • Evening temperatures can still be cool, so bring a light sweater for dinner outdoors
  • Book restaurants in advance during the long May 1st holiday weekend

All Months

April through June gives you perfect weather without the summer heat that can hit 35°C. The city comes alive after the harsh Balkan winter, and café terraces reopen along the Vardar. September and October might be even better. Temperatures hover around 20°C, summer crowds disappear, and the surrounding mountains show off their autumn colors. Plus, restaurant terraces stay busy until late October. Winter (December-February) sees temperatures drop to -5°C, but Christmas markets pop up in Macedonia Square. Hotels cut rates in half, and you'll have the Old Bazaar mostly to yourself. Just pack layers. Skip July and August unless you love sweating through sightseeing. The concrete and marble of the city center creates a heat island effect. Locals flee to Lake Ohrid, leaving restaurants with reduced hours. Look, any time works if you're on a budget. Even peak summer hotel rates rarely exceed €60 per night for decent places.
