Tallinn in December

Not the best time

December redeems itself with magical Christmas market atmosphere in the medieval Old Town. The fairy-tale setting under snow is genuinely enchanting, though brutally cold weather limits outdoor exploring. Perfect for a short romantic winter getaway if you can handle the freeze and early darkness.

Weather

December brings early winter with freezing 1°C days and bitter -4°C nights. Snow begins accumulating, especially after mid-month, though rain and sleet still mix in. Daylight shrinks to just 6 hours of weak winter sun, creating a perpetual twilight feeling.

December Tips

  • Christmas market runs from late November through January with mulled wine and crafts
  • Book New Year's Eve dinner months ahead - the few open restaurants fill up fast
  • Dress for serious cold if attending outdoor New Year's celebration in Freedom Square

All Months

May through September gives you the best weather and longest days — we're talking 19 hours of daylight in June. July and August bring crowds but also the warmest temperatures, around 20-25°C. This is when Old Town feels alive with street performers and outdoor cafes. My favorite time? Late May or early September. The weather stays pleasant, tourist numbers drop, and you get that perfect balance of daylight and manageable crowds. September also brings mushroom season — locals head to the forests, and restaurants feature wild chanterelles and porcini. Winter has its own magic if you can handle the cold. Christmas markets fill Town Hall Square from late November, and the medieval setting looks straight out of a snow globe. But we're talking 6 hours of daylight and temperatures around -5°C. The upside? Hotel prices drop by 50%, and you'll have major attractions almost to yourself. Here's the thing about Baltic weather: it's unpredictable. Pack layers regardless of season. I've seen snow in May and 25°C days in October. The good news is most attractions are indoors, so a rainy day won't ruin your plans. Just remember that many outdoor restaurants and some museums reduce hours between October and April.
