Punakha in August
Not the best time
August extends the monsoon misery with continued heavy rains and no clear skies. The ultra-low tourist numbers reflect how unpleasant conditions become.
Weather
August continues the monsoon pattern with heavy rainfall and saturated air. While temperatures remain moderate, the combination of heat and humidity feels oppressive. Rivers reach peak flow, making some bridges impassable.

August Tips
- •Pack anti-fungal powder - everything stays damp in this humidity
- •Photography is challenging with constant overcast skies
- •Some rural roads may be washed out - stick to main routes
All Months
March through May brings rhododendron blooms and clear mountain views, but also spring crowds at major sites. April hits the sweet spot — warm days, cool nights, and fewer tour groups than peak season.
September through November delivers the year's best weather. Crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and crystal-clear views of the Himalayas. October sees the most visitors, so book accommodations early.
Winter (December-February) means cold nights and limited heating, but also empty temples and cheaper rooms. The dzong looks spectacular dusted with snow, and you'll have most trails to yourself.
Avoid June through August unless you love leeches and daily downpours. Monsoon season turns trekking trails into mud slides and blocks mountain views with thick clouds.
