Punakha in September

Great time to visit

September offers the first taste of post-monsoon weather with improving conditions and fewer crowds. The valley looks incredibly green, though trails need more time to dry out.

Weather

September marks the gradual end of monsoon season with decreasing rainfall and clearing skies. Humidity begins dropping and mountain views start reappearing. The landscape is lush green but trails remain muddy from months of rain.

September Tips

  • Early September still sees occasional heavy downpours
  • Rice harvest season makes the valley particularly photogenic
  • Hotels start raising rates as weather improves

All Months

March through May brings rhododendron blooms and clear mountain views, but also spring crowds at major sites. April hits the sweet spot — warm days, cool nights, and fewer tour groups than peak season. September through November delivers the year's best weather. Crisp mornings, warm afternoons, and crystal-clear views of the Himalayas. October sees the most visitors, so book accommodations early. Winter (December-February) means cold nights and limited heating, but also empty temples and cheaper rooms. The dzong looks spectacular dusted with snow, and you'll have most trails to yourself. Avoid June through August unless you love leeches and daily downpours. Monsoon season turns trekking trails into mud slides and blocks mountain views with thick clouds.
