Naoshima in April

Great time to visit

April is magical but crowded. The cherry blossoms are spectacular, but you'll share them with half of Japan.

Weather

April brings the full glory of spring with temperatures reaching the low 20s and cherry blossoms in bloom. Humidity remains comfortable while rain increases to about 8 days of light to moderate showers. Perfect walking weather most days.

Events & Festivals

  • Peak cherry blossom season
  • Golden Week preparation
  • Spring art exhibitions opening

April Tips

  • Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead - this is peak season for domestic tourists
  • Visit Chichu Art Museum early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds
  • Cherry blossom spots around Benesse House are Instagram-famous, expect photo queues

All Months

Spring and fall offer Naoshima at its finest. April brings cherry blossoms that frame Kusama's pumpkin sculptures beautifully, while November delivers crisp air and golden light that makes Ando's concrete architecture glow. Avoid July and August – the humidity is brutal, and the museums get uncomfortably crowded with tour groups. Winter brings a different kind of beauty, with fewer tourists and dramatic skies over the Seto Sea, but some outdoor installations close for maintenance. The Setouchi Triennale art festival runs every three years (next in 2025), bringing special exhibitions but also massive crowds. If you visit during the festival, book accommodation six months ahead and arrive early at popular museums. Tuesday closures affect most museums, so plan accordingly.
