Naoshima in January
Good time to visit
January offers Naoshima at its most peaceful. The cold keeps crowds away but the clear skies make art viewing ideal.
Weather
January brings crisp, clear days to Naoshima with dry winter air and plenty of sunshine. Temperatures hover in the single digits but the lack of humidity makes it feel comfortable for walking between art installations. Expect only 4-5 rainy days, mostly light drizzle.

- •Many outdoor sculptures look stunning against winter skies with fewer tourists blocking views
- •Some ferry services run reduced schedules, so check timetables carefully
All Months
Spring and fall offer Naoshima at its finest. April brings cherry blossoms that frame Kusama's pumpkin sculptures beautifully, while November delivers crisp air and golden light that makes Ando's concrete architecture glow. Avoid July and August – the humidity is brutal, and the museums get uncomfortably crowded with tour groups. Winter brings a different kind of beauty, with fewer tourists and dramatic skies over the Seto Sea, but some outdoor installations close for maintenance. The Setouchi Triennale art festival runs every three years (next in 2025), bringing special exhibitions but also massive crowds. If you visit during the festival, book accommodation six months ahead and arrive early at popular museums. Tuesday closures affect most museums, so plan accordingly.
